As it marks 150 years of existence, the Klan is trying to reshape itself for a new era Yet today, the KKK is still alive and dreams of restoring itself to what it once was: an invisible white supremacist empire spreading its tentacles throughout society. Many assumed the group was dead, a white-robed ghost of hate and violence. Membership dwindled, a unified group fractured, and one-time members went to prison for a string of murderous attacks against blacks. What’s challenging about working with these themes is surpassing the pitfalls of triteness. The coupling is Hollywood, like ghostly Marilyn Manson clad in black with Rose McGowan in a scarlet gown that plunges at the bustline. Twin pillars of American culture, sex and death are both verboten and banal. Courtesy the artist + 2dcloud, Minnesota. ![]() Aidan Koch in Mirror Mirror II (2017) Illustration. Ecstasy, a coveted state, comes from the Ancient Greek ekstasis, to “stand outside oneself.” The closest thing to rapturous, death-like bliss, so the French insist, are orgasms. In the foreword of Mirror Mirror II, the freshly-arrived erotic horror comic anthology edited by Julia Gfrörer and Sean T Collins and released in July by Minnesota-based publisher 2dcloud, Gretchen Alice Felker-Martin writes, “great horror is the pursuit of meaning through defilement, a conscious and inquisitive violation of the mind, the body, the beloved, the home.” In a safe, trusting environment, losing control can feel exhilarating, like bungeeing out of the body before snapping back in. Among what both arousal and fear share is how the sensations strip you bare. ![]() ![]() It’s only 17 minutes long and free on youtube when I wrote this review. I definitely enjoyed the drawings, which remained me of the style of Chris Van Allsburg, one of my favorite picture book artists. ![]() The pattern of the story often follows one page with text and another with pictures. Like Oz, the colors become more vibrant in the library. Morris is blown off out of his world and into a new place where he meets a book friend who leads him to the place where books live. As a child, I remember being drawn to the more vibrant colors, and these wouldn’t have really captured my interest for long. Many of the pages are monochromatic, and the drawings look almost pen and ink. The art is attractive and soothing but in a style that may not capture eyes used to active stimuli. I didn’t have a child to test it on, so I’m just going from memories of my child tendencies, and past experiences of trying to interest small ones in picture books. I joke that I know more about Henry VIII’s family tree than I do about my own (but sadly, it’s probably true). I just hope I make it to the Civil Wars (English, of course) before I die. I still haven’t exhausted all of those possibilities. I devoured every Richard and Wars of the Roses book I could get my hands on and then moved onto the Tudors. Once I got started reading history, I couldn’t stop. And I wondered if the real Richard could possibly have been that bad.Īnd so I fell down the rabbit hole. He played Richard as a sympathetic sociopath-or at least such a delightful sociopath that I fell in love with him. I started reading about British history after seeing Ian McKellen in the film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III. When people ask how much time I spend researching my novels, I usually tell them five years (though now, I suppose, it’s been more like nine). Katherine shares with us how she goes about researching her books, and specifically her latest novel Brazen. Today, I am honoured for The Anne Boleyn Files to be a stop on author Katherine Longshore’s blog tour. ![]() |
